Mykola Stupnik was born on 31 July 1954 in Kryvyi Rih.
In 1976, he graduated with honours from Kryvyi Rih Mining Institute as a Mining Engineer, and in 1981, he completed his postgraduate studies at the Department of Underground Mining.
He is a Doctor of Technical Sciences, Professor, Academician of the Academy of Mining Sciences of Ukraine.
He has been working at Kryvyi Rih National University since 1976 as a Researcher, Head of the research sector of the institute, Associate Professor, Vice-Rector for scientific and pedagogical work and international relations (since 2003), first Vice-Rector (since 2010), Acting Rector (since 2011), Rector (since 2017).
Professional interests: improvement of the design of underground mining systems and optimisation of their parameters, the current state and directions of improvement of engineering education.
Author of 281 scientific and educational works, including publications in scientific journals indexed in Scopus and Web of Science, 6 monographs, 40 patents of Ukraine, 7 textbooks and manuals.
Mykola Stupnik pays considerable attention to training specialists for foreign countries and maintains close ties with the embassies of foreign countries whose citizens are Students of the university. He promotes academic mobility of Students and Lecturers, develops cooperation with the France-Ukraine Exchange Federation (FEFU) in organising Student exchanges, internships for Students in France, and pedagogical and research internships for Lecturers. He coordinated the university's participation in the European Union educational programme Tempus "Higher Engineering Education for Environmentally Sustainable Industrial Development" 543966-2013-BE-JPCR. He participates in the ERASMUS+ academic mobility programme and represents the university at various educational and scientific events.
Mykola Stupnik is fluent in French. For four years he was a Professor in the People's Democratic Republic of Algeria. As a French government scholarship holder, he studied at the Higher National School of Mines in Paris.
He heads the organising committees of international scientific and technical and inter-university scientific and methodological conferences and is a member of the editorial board of the journal "The Annals of the University of Petrosani, Mining Engineering" (Romania).
He was awarded the President of Ukraine's medal "20 Years of Independence of Ukraine"; the badge "Excellence in Education of Ukraine", the Certificate of Honour of the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports of Ukraine; the Acknowledgement of the Head of the Dnipro Regional State Administration, the badge "For the Development of the Region" and the Commemorative Badge "80 Years of Dnipro Region", and the badges "For Merit to the City" of I-III degrees.
Mykola Stupnik was awarded the honorary title "Honoured Worker of Education of Ukraine" and is a winner of the State Prize of Ukraine in Science and Technology (2020).
